How to Write a Check

Writing a check is an essential and a very important part of every adult’s life. Even in today’s high tech world, check plays a prime role in withdrawing any amount from the bank or to make a payment to somebody. You need to know the right way as to how to write a check because any mistake will lead to cancellation of the check. Writing a check is not at all a difficult task but in this article, we will tell you the correct way to write the check so that next time when you fill a check you don’t have to face any difficulty.

Step by step procedure is discussed below to write a check.

  1. Date
    Write the current date at the top right-hand corner of the check. Various formats for writing a date can be used like YMD, DMY or MDY separated with a slash (/), hyphen (-) or comma (,). Postdating the check can also be done if you want the check to be used for the future purpose.
  2. Payee
    On the left side of the check beside “Pay to the order of”, write the name of the party to whom you want to make the payment. It can be an individual, company or an organization. Using of acronyms should be avoided while writing the name.
  3. Amount in numbers
    On the right side of the check, you will find a small box in which you have to write the amount you have to pay in numbers. The dollar sign $ is already printed in the check so you don’t have to write it again.

  1. Amount in words
    After writing the amount in numbers, you have to write the exact same amount in words to avoid any sort of doubt or embezzlement. Using of capital letters while writing the amount in words is advisable. Also if the amount in numbers and words doesn’t match the amount written in words will be considered final by the bank.
  2. Memo
    Writing this part in the check is optional. It is like adding a reminder for yourself as to for what purpose you wrote that check like “to pay my rent” or “to pay the electricity bill”. It will not affect the working of the check in any way.
  3. Signature
    In the bottom right side of the check put your signature. It has to be the same signature you used when you opened the bank account. In case of any discrepancies, the check will not be considered as a valid check.

  1. Account Number: Your bank account number will be printed on the bottom of your check and will be same for all your checks.
  2. Check Number: Each check has its own check number which will be different from any other check number.
  3. Routing Number: For electronic clearing of the check routing number is used which is a nine digit number printed on the bottom of the check.
